Pechakucha | Volume 34, City Builders
What have you done for Toronto lately?

“Volume 34 | City Builders showcas[ed] young, creative city builders – those working on, responding to, advocating for, and imagining our fine city. This Volume advanc[ed] the idea that a project doesn’t need to be large scale and expensive to have transformational impact. [The event planners]  had put together an exciting line-up of city builders who are giving something to the city, provoking change, starting conversations, and making the streets more animated and beautiful. ”

MILAN EXPO 2015

Wednesday, October 1st, 2014

Iran’s Pavilion, Milan Expo 2015
A joint venture between Ja Architecture Studio and Maher va Hamkaran Consulting engineering Firm.

milan expo-01

Earth is the focus of Milan Expo 2015.
Our main objective in this project is to infuse space under the earth, by raising parts of its shell and introducing Iran’s diverse ecology underneath.
This method of engaging with nature has a long standing history in Iran’s vernacular architecture; subterranean houses in hot climate, houses carved into the rock in mountainous regions and finally Yakhchals and Abanbars (water, ice and food reservoirs).
Function
The pavilion has been divided into four different climatic zones which not only represent Iran’s climatic diversity but also make the visitors’ experience of each space a unique one.

The Elements
Water;
Water stream has always been an inseparable part of Iran’s architecture and the binding element between different climatic rooms in this proposal.
The water of the stream is pumped to the system from the front pond and returns to it at the end. The water runoff from the roofs and other hard surfaces would also get collected by the channels at the bottom of the roof slopes led towards the edges of the site and finally merge with the central water stream.

DRAVA EXPERIENCE

Drava River, Maribor EPK 2012-Competition
European capital of culture-2012
A Jastudio Work in collaboration with Tadj-Farzin Studio

The new foot way and bicycle bridge

The city of Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia and it is getting ready to become the European Capital of Culture in 2012. As part of the three catalyst projects to revive the historic riverfront of the city, the city of Maribor host a competition to design a 150 meter long footbridge for walking and cycling on the location of a demolished historic bridge. Ja Studio’s proposal was an effort to re-visit the idea of the bridge as a multi-functional urban surface that resolves its geometry between the structural issues of crossing and spanning and the functional opportunities that may potentially arise from these structural necessities.  Below is the submitted description for our entry:
